UK police face backlash after disturbing vision of Henry Nowak’s arrest released
We'll go now to the UK, where a court has jailed 23 -year -old Vikram Digwa for life after he fatally stabbed an 18 -year -old university student with a large blade that he claimed to carry for religious reasons. He's a Sikh. Now, the UK police, after sustained pressure, have released the following footage, a warning. Some of you may find it disturbing.
Put the hand in the cuff, mate.
There he is, handcuffed after he was stabbed.Significant backlash for the police and the way they've handled that. They initially believe the killer's false account that he was being racially abused. Here to discuss this, Sky News contributor and News Corp European correspondent, Sophie Ellsworth.Sophie, the family of Henry Novak, that's the young man who was killed, no whack, I should say, have laid fault for their son's death squarely with police. And his father spoke to the media.
Have a listen.
Henry was pulled across the gravel, his hands forced behind his back, and he was placed in handcuffs.Instead of being treated as a dying victim, police formally arrested Henry for assault and read him his rights. That was the last thing he heard.
This has been huge news for some time in the UK, but the last two or three days, honestly, I've seen nothing but people reacting to this, Soph.
Well, Peter, that vision there is incredibly disturbing. It's broadcast all over the media here.Talkback Radio this morning has been flooded with callers furious at the handling of this case by the British police. And that matter is now before the police watchdog. But, Peter, this is incredibly concerning that people are allowed in this country to carry these extremelylarge knives for what they claim is religious reasons and Nigel Farage has been on radio this morning discussing this, really saying that there is two -tier policing here in the UK and unfortunately for white people they're being treated are lesser than black people here in the UK.
That is the argument that he's making and he's very concerned about the rising migration here.So there's a whole raft of issues that have been brought to the fore here as a result of this terribly sad case, Peter.
Yeah, good of you to mention Nigel Farage.I've got that clip that you mentioned there from his response this morning.Let's have a listen.
Henry's family.have responded to this in just the most extraordinarily dignified way.But I suggest the rest of us respond to this with pure cold rage. This is wrong. All the values and standards of living in a free country where everybody is judged equally before the law have been trashed and thrown away.
Yeah, there's been an exemption in many places for Sikhs to have these ceremonial knives, but they're still a weapon. They still work, as you can obviously see in the case of this young man.And of course, when you make a distinction for one religion to carry a weapon, I think Nigel's point in the rest of that interview goes on.Where does that end, Sophie? So you've got almost nothing from the Prime Minister, I find that extraordinary, too, because the accusation by the killer was that this bloke was a racist, so they arrest the young man dying. But Keir Starmer and all these Labor MPs who took a knee for George Floyd when he died at the hands of police in the U .
S., well, they are silent on this.
Well, Sakhir Stimer has said that this matter should be taken to the police watchdog. But yes, Peter. He has largely said very little about this. Now, this is the British Prime Minister, as you just referenced, who took the knee for George Floyd. And we are not seeing that in the UK.We saw the Winston Churchill statue graffitied during that time.
We saw so many protests, not a single thing here in the UK.And interestingly, Peter, That interview with Nigel Farage in the last hour was not broadcast on any of the main TV networks. They were pointing this out on radio this morning. They're not even taking Nigel Farage on this. Now, this has been another leader. One of the other parties they would have.
And that just shows the huge divide here in Britain now.And I think this case will only get more and more attention as the days roll on.by media who are giving it the service that it deserves.Because, Peter, this is incredibly serious. This young man, in his final moments, he was being read his legal rights as he lay on a footpath or on the pavement, dying. And that is incredibly concerning.
That's horrific, Sophie. We'll leave it there.
