Hi, my name's Phil.I like talking about politics. So in this video, I want to go over a little spat between Carol Vorderman and Rob Kenyon, who is Reform UK's candidate in Makerfield.I'm sure we all know who Carol Vorderman is.Robert Kenyon, some years ago, but it wasn't loads of years ago, said something incredibly crass about Vorderman, or certainly echoed the sentiment.and carol vorderman said well you know now that you're standing for public office you really should apologize he's basically sort of suggested it's not the sort of thing he should be saying so why not just apologize for it but he hasn't and because he hasn't carol vorderman decided to take it further and she wrote a letter to everyone in Makefield.

0:47

It was particularly directed at the women of Makefield.

0:51

So, you know, just nearly half the population, half the voters. And I'm going to read it out in a moment. It was a bit over a week ago.I didn't talk about it at the time because I was getting ready to go to London, of course.

1:02

But the Manchester Evening News have been doing a bit of straw polling and seem to be finding quite a few women who, after reading the letter, and they've all had the letter, and thinking yeah I was going to vote for Reform UK but I'm not sure now.So here's the letter. Now I'm going to read it all out because it's not hugely long but also I don't want to split it into bits. It's all very well written.I'm going to talk a little bit about Labour comms later on because there's a couple of things in this Manchester Evening News article I want to draw attention to and but I just want to read this whole thing out because it's very well laid out. Please forgive me for asking for a moment of your time and thank you for reading this, I appreciate it.

1:46

I want to talk to you woman to woman about the reform candidate standing in your by -election, Rob Kenyon, and how he thinks about us.Because I think it matters.Reform's Rob Kenyon deleted his social media accounts to hide what he'd posted.but investigations have uncovered a pattern of nasty posts about women. Here are just some of them.Agreed with someone who said they wanted to smell and lick Carol Vorderman's arsehole, saying it was what we are all thinking.

2:16

Terrible comments about women who have had an abortion.Comparing English to European women, how English women don't care, just walk around with their fat bellies and strange shapes.Said in response to photos of European women, rugby players would get me off any of those with a bazooka.About female rugby players and the way they handle their knockers.Suggesting women can't drive or referee. And if you're in any doubt, he's openly stated, I'm sexist.

2:50

When asked simply to say sorry, he refused. Why does all this matter?Well, I'm 65.I was brought up in poverty in North Wales. And we've all had to battle hard to get rights for our daughters and their daughters. And I don't want our girls to lose them now.

3:08

And this is what reform has said they'll do.Why am I writing to you?Well Rob Kenyon has dragged me into his mess and like so many of us we've had to fight for women to have a decent education, live well and safely with millions of really good blokes helping us along the way. Also I was a free school meals kid who spent half her life in the North, including working in Ley and living in Leeds for many years and making count down there for 26 years. As opposed to most of the private school reform leaders who helicopter in and who are the ones who would have the real power, not Kenyan, I am absolutely not a Londoner. But I want to make you aware, if you're not aware already, that this country

3:55

of approach towards women and our protections is Reform's pattern. In 2024, Reform's James McMurdoch became an MP.After the election, it was found that he'd been convicted for assault by beating of his girlfriend outside a nightclub.Court records stated that she was on the ground and he was kicking her.Reform said he did his time.Reform has already voted against the Employment Rights Act which strengthened maternity rights and sick pay.

4:25

Reform has pledged to abolish the Equality Act on day one if they ever become a government, the same act that protects women from workplace harassment, strives for equal pay and underpins maternity rights. And Reform thinks the way Rob Kenyon has spoken about women is not a problem.except reports from organisations protecting girls show it is.Right now the women of Makefield have real power and it's wonderful to be able to say that. You can decide if Rob Kenyon is the person you want to represent you.Thank you so much for your time and however you vote I genuinely wish you and your family well.

5:03

Carol Vorderman.

5:07

He probably should have apologised in all honesty.I mean it's not even like Rob Kenyon's really tried to double down too much on it.Like Reform UK have said yeah this isn't the sort of thing you should be saying.Kenyon himself has had to said yeah he's basically suggesting yeah if i had my time again i wouldn't have said it or i wouldn't say it now as a politician type of thing so like why not just apologize is he that weak he can't stand to apologize because i'll tell you something this is a very very good letter i'll put a link in the description to the best copy i can find if it's really weird it's actually quite hard to find weirdly unless you make a field in which case you already got a copy and it it i'm actually going to say it it does more to explain the benefitsof Labour's Employment Rights Act than Labour have been doing. It's exactly the sort of thing they should have been sending through letterboxes.

5:58

But then there was the Manchester Evening News, right. So in this, it goes over a few things actually, not all of which are to Robert Kenyon's detriment, but there's a few things here. The Manchester Evening News again canvassed opinion among female voters in the constituency.

6:15

One woman said she had earlier considered voting for Nigel Farage's party at the by -election on June 18th until she received Ms Vorderman's letter.

6:24

Amanda Butler, 59, said, I was swaying towards reform at one point because of immigration, probably like everyone else who's thinking of voting for them. But I got a letter from Carol and I think it did sway me actually with what she said.I don't know whether all the allegations are true. They are true. And obviously his defence is that it was a long time ago.

6:42

It wasn't that long ago.And it was to a private group of people. No it weren't.If it was to a private group of people we wouldn't have it.It was public. But you still can't help thinking that those are his views and he's put those out there.

6:56

I think she's pointed that out and it's really good that she's pointed out.I'm not saying it's 100 % swayed me, but it's definitely given me food for thought. We've got here, I'm half and half with the party.I don't fully agree with them because I'm quite interested in animal rights. And it doesn't seem the party that's represented my views on things like that. No, I'm sure it's not.

7:14

It's not just about me and my own personal financial game. It's about what you believe in as well. You've got to believe in what the leader of the party believes in as well.So I mean, I mean, put it this way, if you just apologised, There would have been no letter. He would have just, you know, just said, I am sorry. It was disgusting.

I really don't hold reviews like that now.I have changed, you know, and he could just, you know, he's tried to sort of allude to the fact that some of the life he's lived since has given him lessons.Just say to him, oh, it's true or not.It probably is.true.Well we know it's not true because he refused to apologise.

7:48

Someone who's genuinely regretful would just apologise. What's the big deal in an apology?

7:53

So I think he's made a bit of a mistake. But I am going to point something else out.The Manchester Evening News article isn't all bad news for Rob Kenyon because on Question Time he talked about support for not building on the Green Belt which chimes with a lot of people. And a lot of people think that Labour are and they're not.what their myth, and again this is something that Labour have, Labour comms, have failed to point out.People think of the green belt being lovely fields and things like that, it's not.

8:18

The green belt is literally just the space between towns, a lot of it is like concrete, it's already concreted over, it's just at the moment concrete wasteland and Labour are saying well we should build things on it because at the moment it's derelict and there's nothing green about it.So they tried to come up with this term the grey belt to signify that but their comms is so awful. So in actual fact there's a quote here, Another female voter said that after watching Mr Kenyon on Question Time she's leaning towards giving him her vote due to his stance on protecting the Green Belt.Well Reform UK aren't protecting the Green Belt, they're just anti -building houses, they just don't want houses built. And it says Valerie Mills 73 said she'd never voted for Reform before.but is now considering backing Mr Farage's party or Restore Britain.

9:04

My issue is with the new houses being built on green belt, because at the moment in this country there are two million derelict houses which could be improved, and actually they're not, but there are derelict houses, and there are also a lot of brownfield sites that could be improved.Again, getting this idea that they think Labour are building on green and pleasant lands. They're not.We need to get people back into the towns and cities rather than building on the countryside. We're not building on the countryside.People are encouraged to go walking, improve their health, but if there are less and less green spaces, then there'll be less for people to do.

9:35

In my opinion, that's my priority, the greenbelt and preserving our countryside for people to enjoy.Absolute nonsense. What Labour need to do is ask if Carol Vorderman will write them a few more letters on other aspects of it because I go back to the letter, you know, in this letter from Carol Vorderman she is explaining that they are wanting to abolish women's rights and they are.Reform UK, it's official policy, they want to scrap the Employment Rights Act, there are women's rights baked into that. They want to scrap the Equalities Act.Well, there's a lot of thing at the moment about trans rights in the Equalities Act, but actually the Equalities Act covers all sorts of groups of people who are unfairly treated, including women.

10:17

The Equalities Act includes a lot of rights for women.Going.Gone.Bye -bye.There are some rights for women also in the European Convention of Human Rights. They want us to leave that.

10:27

OK?So it is absolutely on the nail that Reform UK want to abolish all, and I mean all, women's rights.

10:35

Carol Vorderman makes that point.Labour have failed to make that point to people.

10:41

And this is the sort of communication you really need.I mean, I'd said before, long before Carol Vorderman sent this letter out, that Labour, when they've been introducing major new legislation, they should actually write to every household in the country about what they've done as a public information thing.government message, not party political, government message. These are now your new rights. So they could have done that a few months ago before the local elections on the new employment rights coming online, the new renters rights coming online. So some of those are now in law.

11:13

There are some others being phased in next year.So next year they could bring another one. These are your new rights as well. These are the rights the government has now given you.Make sure you're aware of them. And here are some here are places you can go if you feel these rights are being impinged for the help you can get.

11:28

and all of that does is send that message out there you don't make it party I mean Carol is not

11:35

party political here, she's not partisan, she's able to write whatever she wants, this has been done with hope not hate, so she's all, she's not just explained what's happened, she's explained what Reform UK are intending to do, but Labour should do it from a point of view of what they have done. It's this for me, is first of all it's a bit of a lesson to people, if you know you've messed up, if you accept you've messed up, just apologise. But the second thing is, this is a lesson in how to communicate because it's very well structured. It's not long.It says a lot in not many words. But anyway, there it is.
