What It's like Living in My $19'000 Abandoned House in Japan's Countryside

Hello and welcome to the countryside of Japan.In today's episode we're going to be doing some more cleaning up of my abandoned house.I have my first visitors coming to stay in the house with me. I finally get to pick up the vehicle that I talked about episodes ago and this episode I have my first, I guess, accident or where something goes wrong.

Oh my god, I can't believe that just happened.

I got so much to do in this video, so much cleaning up to do and I'm going to be taking you with me as I explore the country towns in Japan.Also, we're going to Tokyo.Let's get started.

And I actually have some visitors.My sisters Nicole and Natalie are here right now.So we're going to be going around town.We're still going to be doing some work on the house and I'm going to be showing them the area where I live.First pit stop this morning is the laundromat.

Got a big bag of washes.

We're in the main strip of KU right now.It's a little bit rainy and quiet.

And I found a pajama shop so I want to go shopping.

yeah it's so cute the shop's run by some older japanese couple i bought myself these pajamas they are so cute and it also comes with the little matching pants as well i'm going to be putting the location of all these businesses on screen so if you guys are ever in kyu city and want to check them out for yourself that was a very cute pajamas shop I'm not sure what this shop is, but I do want to check it out.Looks like a bunch of collectibles.Rather than just getting a normal convenience store coffee, we are going to a coffee shop in town.

She brought us some oranges.So cute.

They were very sweet old ladies.And I didn't realize, but the guy in the storeactually spoke English so he asked us where we were from and spoke to us afterwards.We gotta check out the Don Don.One of the things about Don Quixote is that obviously I'm not in Tokyo or Osaka or anything like that so it's a lot cheaper to buy like your souvenirs and everything like that in these country towns versus like Tokyo or whatever.One thing that I can appreciate being back in the countryside is it is so much more quiet.

I just spent like the last few days in Tokyo with my sisters and sometimes in these specific stores you're like shoulder to shoulder with people so it's nice to be able to just freely walk around again.Damn they sell these uh DCs in here.I remember when I was like 12 getting probably the chunkiest pair of those DCs in like a really bloom color.I swear they were like $150 when I was like 12 years old.So it's crazy to see them in a Don for $50.$5 oil lantern.

It's cute.They have like this assortment of discounted items laid out on the floor here that whenever I come here, I like to look through.I just found this like animal soap dispenser.I think I know why no one was buying it.Guys that does not really look like a polar bear.So in Don Quixote they have what's called a gacha gacha market.

Basically you put money into this little vending machine thingy and you have the chance of winning a prize.Now these are quite crazy because as you can see...Louis V coach quite high -end brands, so I'm not really interested in this one But Nat is so she's gonna try it out and the one that I'm gonna do which is a lot more suited tools the DIY gotcha gotcha market.Look at what we can win.All stuff that I'll definitely put to use

Okay so now I'm going to take the girls up into the mountains and show them the lake and maybe some of the forest.Found this little river spot we've pulled in.I don't know if it was some sort of like four -wheel drive track but it looks like you can drive down through it.Trail just kind of looks like it keeps going but let's have an explore.

I'm gonna feel how cold it is.water is.Freezing?Yeah.I'm dying.

Alrighty guys so we're just filming for TikTok.We've got to do twilight scenes in the forest.

Forest is huge.As you drive up into the mountains here there's so many abandoned houses that have literally just caved in because no one's done the upkeep of them.There you go Nicole.In the toilet, man.

That's crazy.We'll give it a go, I guess.Is there a light or not?

I'm sure whoever crashed into this was probably pretty scared.Check the drop.I can hear people through there though.There's some Japanese fishermen over there.Very nice spot.I'm so lucky to have this so close to my house.

Tonight we're just heading to the supermarket to get like a pre -made meal.They're honestly so good and we don't really feel like going anywhere tonight.Peanut butter sandwich, yum.Best stuff.For tonight's dinner, I got a pork cutlet and a nice thick omelette.

I'm having a salmon and rice bowl little situation.

I bought some Kewpie mayo too.Good morning everyone.It is a very wet day here today in the countryside of Japan.I wish that the weather was a bit nicer while my sisters are here so they get to experience it with a bit of sunlight but regardless we're still gonna have a good time.Me and Nicole are gonna head to the Konbini and I also have to take these sticks and some rubbish to the station.I just spoke to my neighbor Kaneko -san and pretty sure he said he's having some issues with his TV unit or his TV reception.

So once I get back I'm gonna try and help him out and see if we can get it working.understanding of what my neighbor was saying.It's the neighbor next to Kanako.The one just there.I'm pretty sure what she was saying is obviously because of the bad weather we're having right now and you know the big trees I've got here.It's affecting her TV antenna.

So I just let her know that I'm actually going to be cutting down these big trees.this week.I did plan on cutting them down soon anyways but I think I'm gonna speed up the process just to obviously keep the peace and make sure that she can like still watch TV and stuff.But one thing I was thinking and I don't know if this is possible so maybe you guys can help me. I have an antenna.Wait let me show you.I actually physically couldn't watch TV here because I don't fully understand and everything's fully in Japanese and I also don't have a TV.

But maybe if anyone can let me know if it's possibleto like gift someone an antenna because this one obviously goes a lot higher and hers is just that one there so but I think maybe today I can at least chip away at some of these trees to you know hopefully help so I think that's what we'll do guys let's cut down some trees because this is quite a large tree I think my best approach is going to be hitting it from the top from the window dropping some of the branches and then slowly working my way down from the top.It's going to be quite the challenge though.I've organized someone to come and help me sometime next week to bring down these bigger trees.

I do think they look nice but as you can see they're like lifting the ground up here and the roots will ruin your foundations of the house so I do need to take them out.

I am going to be leaving a lot of the bigger trees in the backyard.Okay, it's a little bit further out than I thought it was, so I think I'm gonna have to get like an extendable saw.

Maybe even one of those extendable chainsaws.

If I can get an extendable chainsaw, I should be able to cut these.How's that you doing?No bow back.None in stock at this store, so we're gonna go to another hardware store and try our luck.Hardware store number two.I really hope that this one has it.

Do not have it here either.Third time lucky.Please.Oh my god.That's crazy.The monkey and the bird on it.

I think I see one guys.Now have an extendable pole chainsaw.Let's go cut some trees.

Okay, so Jack's currently working outside and while he's doing that we're going to get stuck into cleaning this shelf behind us here.

Alrighty, so Jack has told us that he wants to keep all the cleaning products so we're just going to take everything off the shelf and we're going to put it underneath the bathroom sink.Found some gloves so we can put these on too.

This might just fit in there, Cal.Here's all the cleaning products in the drawer.Close that.And then this shelf is now empty.We're going to grab all the food and we're going to dispose of it in these rubbish bags.It's like tuna or something.

Tuna cans.

That bucket's empty.We've got a lot more food in here, like so many curry packets.Spies 2023, so these have all gotta go as well.First bag of food waste.Empty bucket.Ramen?

Noodles?Noodles.These all expire 2024.The next bucket empty.

We've got a bottle of water soy sauce another source expires 2023 Anyway, get rid of them.Corn starch.

That is done.Done.This is how much we've cleared out so far.Just put those over there.We obviously won't throw out the hairdryers.So up here, I think we've got about four cooktops.

I think Jack should keep them just in case.So let's move them outside to the storage shed.All the cooktops are now up here.Now that the shelf is gone, let's clean up the floor.We're just going to...All right, we've got multi cleaner now, let's clean the floors there's just a lot going on here So what we're thinking is we'll remove all of this give it a good clean and then transfer it all over the shelf here Yeah, that shelf needs a good scrub.

Let's find some spray.

So much more space here where that cupboard was and then we've cleaned and bleached everything and then we've also stored all the mops and everything in the corner there.And then we've cleaned out the bathroom as well.

It honestly feels like way bigger now that there's no shelf in here.But pretty much this room is going to be one of the first rooms that we totally renovate.I think the only thing that I'm going to keep the same in here is the wood trim, but basically everything is getting redone.new floors, new walls.The roof has a little bit of mold so we're going to take off the wallpaper and inspect that.Basically all the wallpaper is going to come off.

I'll probably just get a second hand washing machine.I'm going to get a new bathroom unit and then possibly some shelving on this wall.

I'm curious to see the condition of the wall and floor.around this washing machine.

I feel like this room's finally at a stage where it's like okay now it's ready to have everything taken off and a fresh start.The reason I'm doing the bathroom first is because that obviously anywhere with water has the most chance of you know if there's been a slow water leak over 30 years.

Who knows the condition behind this unit and that one.So I guess we'll wait and see.

So I picked up some bags for the mulch and I also now have a cordless chainsaw and a extender pole.Let's test this thing out.Okay, that works pretty damn good.Now I'm gonna head upstairs and try and get some of those taller ones from the window.I was like worried that the branches would fall like onto the neighbor's shed, but they're kind of just like piling up on the roof and the other tree.So, uh, I need to see if I've got something where I can like kind of grab them because I really don't want them to fall on the neighbor's roof.

The rake may work.

See I could stand out on the roof but honestly I just don't want to risk it.

Like I am not entirely sure of the condition of these tiles and the last thing that I want is to fall off the roof at this height.So that's why I'm using like an extendable.

I really hope it was an old one.Just found eggs on the ground.I'm gonna see if there's any more and I'm gonna try and get this back up in a tree.I've tied it back up in this.I'm hoping that uh the parents are able to find it.Not that sturdy but I hope that's just at least enough support for the nest.

It's pretty well in there.I hate this.I guess when you let things get overgrown nature kind of takes back over again.The girls are heading into town to apparently pick something up so I'll see them later and when they get back they want to do some mulching.

Taking Jack's car because he's been saying for so long now how he doesn't have a TV andhe's in his new house we thought this is perfect.We'll get him a TV as a housewarming gift.This car is so much fun to drive.I haven't driven a car without a reverse screen in years.Nick's just paying for parking and then Don Quixote is just there.

Now we've got to go find the TV section.We found the TVs but there's actually like quite a lot in here.Okay so originally we wanted this size here but they're all sold out so we're going actually with the bigger TV now.She is secured in the car.

We're on the road again.We got you a present.

So nice.Thank you guys.That tree has grown right up through the gutter.That's what's stuck right now.So Nicole's gonna actually do some mulching for me, which is gonna be a huge help.First time mulching, are you excited?

First time, yep, very excited.Let's give it a go.

Slow stop.Check the size of that vine.I'm actually starting to see some sort of pathway.Some of you wanted to know why I'm not burning any of this off.Obviously, it would save me so much time, but you're actually not allowed to in Japan.I'm pretty sure you can only burn off if it's on like a farm or like a rice field or something like that, so I can't burn any of this.

So that's why I'm mulching it off.But yeah, I am gonna hire a truck soon, I think, for the bigger logs and all this green waste.I think we've just got a base of one of the vines.Excellent.Yeah, check that out.Vines are insane.

One of the things that the neighbors would tell me was how the mosquitoes are so bad back here.And obviously their yard's right next door, so it would attract mosquitoes and you know, they'd probably get bitten all the time.It is like a literal nest back here.I don't know how I haven't been stung more times, but there is so many.Well guys, we actually have some sort of pathway through now.This whole section has now been cleared out.

And yeah, check the view.So nice.Pretty sure under this section there's a concrete path.It's just so covered in leaves and vines.

But yeah, we're slowly making our way through the greenhouses.

This week or next week, I'm going to have someone helping me with the trees, cutting down the bigger ones.It honestly feels so nice to just have this section cleared out.Obviously, it's only like not even a quarter of the work that's got to be done, but it's nice to see it.Another big pile but Nicole mulched so much of that.Literally the process is so much quicker when you have two people doing it.Tonight for dinner we're gonna be heading to this restaurant that's about 15 minutes away from the house.

I had this saved before I even moved here and I really want to check it out.It looks so nice so let's go.You gotta be so careful on these roads we just saw four right there.forgotten what this place is called but I'm gonna put it on screen now.It's called Garment District.Let's check it out.

For starters we've got bacon and potato gnocchi.I got a steak withLook how good that looks.

I've got the meatballs and I got mashed potato.

And I got the carbonara.

Late night combini run.So I got these little uh I don't know if they're mochi balls or rice balls or what but as you can see very nice looking.Mmm.I guess it is, probably just mochi.It's very chewy though.Alright guys, I'm heading to bed.

I'll see you tomorrow.Good morning everyone.Today we're going to be heading down into town and getting a coffee and picking up a few things before the girls leave.Decided to come again in the morning for breakfast because their breakfast menu looks so good.Yum.

These are so good.

Yum.I got a French toast with cream.Alright, we're going to go check out the Uniqlo near home.looking for some shoes.One of the downsides about being a size 12 US in Japan is that it is very hard to find shoes.I think the maximum size they had just then was a 10.

Alright, we've head into the main part of town and we're gonna get some acai bowls.It's crazy because the main part of town sometimes is so quiet like like low -key looks like a ghost town but then you come here on the weekend and it's actually quite busy.All right, so we're back home now.We didn't get home till late afternoon, but I figured that since I've got a little bit of time before the sun goes down, we're going to try and clear out some of this pathway.To be honest, it's probably going to be better to shovel it because it's just covered in vines.Once I finally get to power wash this, the difference that it's going to make is crazy.

So from what I understand, this is a pathway the whole way along.There's like some rock wall kind of thing separating the path from the garden.Under all the dirt and vines was, uh, yeah, concrete.Now the vines have definitely done their damage on this concrete.

But yeah, I'm very curious to see how far along it goes.

Dinner time.I'm going to be taking my sisters to the brewery that you may have seen, like, three episodes ago.

This place is so nice.These 7 -Eleven cars are hilarious.Look at the size of it.

It's so little.

7 -Eleven snack time.I actually came to the grocery store instead.They sell Milo here.I did not expect to see Milo in country Japan.I just found this then but you can grind your coffee beans at the grocery store here in Japan.So random.

I'm not even in the mood for the snacks right now.I'm going to be heading to bed instead.I'll see you tomorrow.So this morning I'm actually heading to Tokyo.For the last few days that the girls are here we're going to be hanging out and doing stuff in Tokyo.And at the end of the trip I'm going to be picking up the vehicle that I spoke about.

I'm super excited.I cannot wait to get it.So yeah, I'm going to be bringing you guys to Tokyo with me and with me to pick up the other vehicle that I bought.Trying to fit four suitcases into this little jimny is hell.

That's true.And then Nicole sits in the back.We've got one on her lap.I sit in the front and then we've got my suitcase at my feet.

It's quite difficult and uncomfortable, but we're making it work.

To get to Tokyo today it takes us about two and a bit hours on train.

It's really comfortable back here guys.

I actually got one full leg up.

Not quite sure what the interior design choices were here with whatever the hell these are glued to the wall, but Yeah, like what?Anyways, made it to the accommodation.Now we're gonna go get some food.Love this.Tonight we're gonna be getting some Italian for dinner, which I'm very much looking forward to.

I don't even know what one this is, but it looks so good.Pasta, we've got carbonara, and then also a beef bolognese.

Guys from Tokyo, today I'm gonna be picking up my new vehicle.We have a little bit of a train journey, and then I'm gonna have to get it back.to talk here.Thought I smelled something.I can't believe that just happened.So I just picked up my Harley and took it for the first ride and I was like something like low -key smells.

And so I was checking the bike for like you know like maybe a bit of rubber was sitting on the hot part or whatever.Guys my freaking pants were on fire.I thought it was, I thought my legs were a bit hot.I can't believe that happened.I've had an idea, I don't know how this is going to work, but obviously because my pants are quite baggy, they're flapping in the wind onto the exhaust.So I just bought some socks and I'm going to like tie them around my pants.

Right, now when my pants set on fire again, I'm not actually going to be able to pull them off because they're loosely tied to me.I finally made it back to Tokyo.Now, I found this motorbike car park.As you can see, number three.I just paid like $12 for my parking.I am an idiot.

I don't even know how this works, but I've just unlocked this car's car park.

So I've just paid their parking for them.Oh, that was a long ride, but I guess enjoy your free parking.I made it.I couldn't even park at that car park, so I've just rode there, paid for a car's car park, and then left.

I parked next to, I'm pretty sure it's like a Honda Steed, but they're really cool bikes.
