Do you know how you're going to vote?Yeah.Reform.

0:03

They're saying all the right things, reform. But what will they do when they get in?I'm definitely 100 % reform.

0:09

I'm voting reform.I'm not so sure reform is the answer.

0:13

Yeah, I'm big on it, yeah.

We're here in Hindley today, which is in the Makerfield constituency. We're here to chat with voters in this part of the area, just to ask how they feel about this crucial by -election coming up on June the 18th.Obviously we know Labour are running in it with Andy Burnham.Reformer Nigel Farage said they're going to throw absolutely everything at it too.So it's going to be an interesting vote to see how it turns out.Let's see what people have to say today.

0:42

What do you make of all the Obviously the fact that you've got this big election and Andy Burnham's coming to stand here.

0:47

I won't be voting for Andy Burnham.Do you know how you're going to vote?reform. When you look at all the barbers what's just on Market Street alone, it's horrendous. So you've got vape shop after vape shop, nail bars, but there's nothing where you can go shopping down Market Street like we used to do in bygone times. But there's nothing like that now, nothing at all.

1:09

Can I ask you, obviously you mentioned about prices going up, how does that impact people here in Hingley?

1:13

Well I think it impacts them a lot.People Petrol going up, I mean, that's a killer on top of everything. And the government not even reducing the tax on it to help the situation. They're making more out of it.I've always been conservative, to be truthful. But there again, they're saying all the right things, reform.

1:36

But what will they do when they get in?

1:39

Be a bit more community -oriented.You know, like, instead of bringing people into the community, sort the community out first and then we can bring people in.Because you get a lot of people these days, they want to come over here and then they just want to do their own thing, you know what I mean?

1:52

I think there should be more housing for young families.I know people who, they're living with their parents.they've got young children because they can't get on the social housing. The waiting list is far too long. There's a big problem around here with jobs.My son went to university.

2:10

Well, he's got a history degree. He can't even get a foot in the door with cleaning. No opportunities, no training.and they just left.I'm definitely 100 % reform. They talk common sense and I actually think they're speaking for make a field.

2:27

People are concentrating at the moment with immigration. To me, I think that's the least of the problems, like Hindley. It's a mess.Market Street's a mess. It's just full of vape shops, takeaways.

2:39

How do you think it's ended up that this area has been forgotten when other areas haven't been?

2:43

As long as I've lived here, it's been the same. It's just been left to rack and ruin. We're just a pathway between Lee and Wigan.I do think we need a change.I think Labour's got too comfortable in the area.History says it was always Labour, strong Labour, but now people are hitting back and people are demanding change.

3:01

But I'm not so sure reform is the answer.I just think it's just millionaire businessmen, ex -Tories, just playing on the immigration card, in my opinion.

3:13

I mean, these shops, I've been told they're getting grants off Wigan Council for all these vape shops.Well, I'm not being funny, I never got a penny when I run my pub.Why are they investing in these people, yet there's other shops that are just shutting down all the time?

3:29

Do you have any idea of how you might vote or what you're thinking about it?

3:33

Yeah, yeah.I'm voting reform.I voted reform in local councils.Because this area just needs a change. We've just been taken for granted for too long. And to me, what's happening with Andy Byrne, it just stinks to me.

3:47

It's a safe seat.I'll jump in there. They'll vote for me. I don't think they'll vote for me. I think people will.sussed him out and said, no, we're not having it.If he gets elected prime minister, he's not going to bother about it, ain't he?Or Ashton and Make, I feel.

4:02

I think, but I think it needs a big change round here, doesn't it?And I'm all for a change, for get someone reforming.Something totally different, new ideas.

4:11

It sounds like, obviously, from what you're saying, that there's a bit of frustration, maybe, at how the area's been run.Do you know how you're going to vote in the by -election?

4:17

I'm going for reform, a million per cent.Immigration, for me, is the biggest key of the lot.and it's just come, it's been rife. You can see over the last two years it's just rife now and it's getting worse and then the kids don't feel safe.I've got four kids in the area.Kids don't go around streets as much these days.

4:35

And how are people feeling?

4:36

Is there anger?Is there frustration?

4:38

It looks like it, doesn't it?Yeah.Oh yeah, there's definitely anger and frustration. But that's why I've got to leave and drive at Remedies. So yeah, I'm big on it, yeah.Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm big on it.

4:50

They've not done what they said later when they got in.They've definitely not done what they said. They've gone back on the word straight away.

4:55

If you grew up in Hingley, around here, what are your kind of opportunities to kind of, you know, progress your life, get a good job?

5:02

There's good money in a lot of trades these days, but obviously, with what's going on in the world. There could be a recession very soon coming, which is looking that way with the economy. So if that happens, then the work will go slack and make it even harder for people around here. It's a very interesting time. This is just the start of this.I think it's going to get a lot worse.

5:21

It was pretty much a washout for reform from the voters that we spoke to today. Many of them said they're going to back Nigel Farage's party in this crucial by -election on June the 18th.There were very few people that said they are going to stick with Labour in this area. One of the things that people said was on their mind was immigration. They said they're seeing small boats crossing the channel and they felt like not enough was being done to stop it.There were also some local issues too, plenty of local issues coming up.

5:53

One of them was the high street in this area, Market Street, which runs through Hindley. One man said that it's just gone to rack and ruin.He said it used to be a pride, a really proud part of this community where people would come together and meet but now they don't feel, he doesn't feel safe when he walks down that street. They feel there are not enough shops that people want or need anymore. So it was a really interesting day chatting with voters here in Hindley in the Makefield constituency and for Labour to keep the seat with Andy Burnham as the candidate I think they're going to have a big fight to convince voters in this part of Makefield.
